What Spiel collects

Spiel is a voice-to-text utility for macOS. It collects only the minimum required to operate and improve the product:

• Anonymous device identifier — a random UUID generated locally on first launch and stored in standard UserDefaults. Not tied to your Apple ID, name, email, or any other identifying information. Used solely to group repeat events from the same install. Wipe by deleting the app.
• Usage events — high-level events such as "app launched", "recording started/stopped" (with duration in milliseconds), "Beautify/Summary/Translate clicked" (with action type and input character count). These help us understand how Spiel is used and where it breaks. No transcript content, no audio, and no clipboard contents are ever transmitted as part of analytics.
• App and OS version — sent with each event so we can debug version-specific issues.

What Spiel does NOT collect

• Your audio recordings. They never leave your Mac. Whisper runs on-device via CoreML, and the captured WAV is deleted right after transcription completes.
• Your transcripts. The cleaned-up text is copied to your clipboard locally; we don't send it back to ourselves.
• Account information. Spiel does not require a sign-in.
• Your contacts, calendar, location, or browsing history.

Cloud features (Beautify, Summary, Translate)

When you click Beautify, Summary, or Translate — or have Auto-beautify on CapsLock turned on — your transcript text is sent to our backend, which proxies the request to OpenAI's gpt-5-nano model via Replicate. The model processes the text and returns the result. We do not log the transcript content or the response on our side. Replicate's and OpenAI's policies apply for their part of the pipeline; both are configured to not retain prompts for training.

If you do not click any of those buttons and have auto-beautify off, no transcript ever leaves your Mac.

Data storage and retention

Analytics events are stored in a Cloudflare D1 database in the EU region. We keep them indefinitely in aggregated form for product analytics. You can request deletion of all events tied to your device id by contacting us (see Support).

Sharing

We do not sell, rent, or share usage data with third parties. The only places your data goes are:

• Our own Cloudflare worker (analytics events).
• Replicate / OpenAI (only when you trigger an LLM action — your transcript text and the system prompt).

Children

Spiel is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from them.
